When is the last time you went for a hike? When is the last time you went for a walk outside? Many authors through the years have recommended the habit of going for a long walk every day, for every writer. Simply going out for a walk can re-connect you to your creative center. It’s relaxing and energizing at the same time. Putting your feet on the ground; listening to the rustle of leaves; the songs of birds in the trees; the feeling of the warmth of the sun, or the wind, or rain drops; the view of swirling autumn leaves: going for a walk can re-connect you with nature.
If you want the whole family to go out for a walk, find different hiking areas or forests with walking paths nearby.
Another great way to get outside and enjoy nature together as a family, both when your children are young as well as at every age, is to play disc golf together!
Disc golf is a fantastic way to get the whole family out and hiking together, through 18 “holes” of disc golf (or however many you choose to complete or have time for.)
As you walk through a disc golf course’s forest paths, up hills, down hills, throw your disc, walk to it, pick it up, throw it again, striving to throw your disk into the metal chain link basket “hole” in as few throws as possible, you get lots of exercise & camaraderie.
Disc golf discs aren’t expensive; you can start with a few and maybe add a few more different disc weights (some are better for “putting” from a short distance; others are better for longer distances, etc.)
There are also disc golf contests you could enter as a family or group or pair up in twos, to give you something to work towards in practicing and improving your disc throwing skills/accuracy/distance. Quite often you’ll go home with a cool new t-shirt, and maybe one of the winning prizes!
There are few athletic competitions like this that you could enter as a family; disc golf is great for bonding and fun. (Running a 5K or other race or walk together, for a charitable cause, is another great way to get the family outside and exercising together.)
Give it a try and let us know how you did! If you do, please post a photo on Instagram, and tag @joyofvegcom!
Happy disc golfing! Happy hiking! Happy walking!
Have fun!
